Buying Healthy Emu
When going to visit emu that you are considering buying make sure the bird(s) seem healthy, that their legs are straight and not turning out to the side, or bowed, their necks should be straight and their stance proud and upright, not slumped. Also check if the bird looks listless or tired. The feathers should be intact and not ragged or chewed, and look out for the emu scratching. The eyes should be bright and clear, and there should be no discharge from the nostrils, mouth or eyes. It's advisable to witness the emu eating and drinking, and to check that the bird doesn't have diarrhoea. Always ask the owner what the emu has been fed on.
If you go to see an emu and it looks unhealthy, you may still feel like taking it on anyway, to help it. If this is the case, make sure to have a separate recovery area for it, and to keep your other birds at a safe distance. Emu can pick on weak newcomers.
Keep in mind that in most countries birds, including emu are not to be moved and relocated in times of Avian Flu / Bird Flu.
Finding a Good Home for Emu
When selling emu and eggs it is our responsibility to make sure that our emu go to good homes. Someone who lacks knowledge may not necessarily provide a bad home, if they are keen to learn the proper ways of looking after their new birds. Be open and generous in helping people gain the knowledge they need to keep their birds thriving; letting them know set-up requirements, such as minimum enclosure measurements and fencing requirements, dietary needs, etc, and offer ongoing help if needed. It is hoped that people have previously studied an emu requirements beforehand, but it's best to make sure; for the birds health and safety, the new owners peace of mind, and the reputation of emu keeping in general.
Let people know about the temperament of the bird(s) you are selling, to make sure your bird will fit with the owner and their already established mob. When selling birds it is advisable to have your bird(s) sexed before you advertise them.
Looking Out for Scammers
There has been a recent surge worldwide of people scamming buyers, stating they will ship eggs once money has been sent. Usually these people do not keep emu. They use the details of faux farms with photographs they have acquired from the internet. It is safest to buy eggs from established emu breeders, and breeders who are recommended, or have been checked out by reputable websites and social media pages. Ask the seller questions about their emu, and emu keeping to test their knowledge. It is also wise to google their phone number and email address as it may be used for several faux farms, and doing a backward image search on their photographs can show you places where those images have been used. Collect the eggs yourself if you can, paying once you get there. If you are collecting, never send a deposit in advance to secure the eggs, a reputable breeder would not expect you to send a deposit for collecting eggs. A quick video chat with the seller so you can see the eggs and birds is a good way to tell if the seller is genuine.
Please question anyone selling you eggs as we can not be held responsible for you being scammed.
